Gardening Together

These are some of the creatures we find in the garden:

Giant African Land Snail - about 5 inches nose to tail

Unfortunately, these beauties, and the yellow ones above, eat the  flowers.

Tiny wee frog

Very hairy caterpillar, and pretty with it

Flying Ants

First catch your flying ants and dump them in water

A closer look.  They are not really green, that's the bucket

Cook, remove wings, cook again, add salt. Then eat.  Tastes nutty.  Nothing like chicken!

RAIN!

It's been raining a bit!

Catching rain water
The lightning blew out the pump for the bore hole and we were without water for almost a week.
all ok now though

It's been a long time. We had a holiday!

After a long time, which has included a visit from friends from home, malaria (for Bridget), Christmas and New Year, we are back to normal again.
We also had a lovely holiday with our daughter Rose in Muizenberg, just outside of Cape Town.  So here are some holiday snaps...

Garden update

The garden is growing well, but you can see from the arid surroundings that all this green represents a lot of watering:

Bridget's water melon and cabbage

Amos's tomatoes

Amos's beans

Bridget's pumpkin, onions, carrots, beans and cabbage

Some interesting bugs

A big praying (and dancing) mantis:

And a stick insect:

SPIDERS!

First there was this one by the tap when we went to water the garden:

watch added for scale

Then there was this one trying to get under the door one evening:

We thought that the shiny black on its back was eggs, but if you look very closely you can see that they are tiny tiny spiders.  When we flicked it with a stick to discourage it from coming into the house it was like a cluster bomb going off!  -Tiny tiny spiders all over the place.

Bridget does not like spiders, which has been news to Amos.  Whenever  a big spider turns up, he has been saying "well, I never knew this about you" as Bridget shudders in a corner!
